Personal
Wilson Tuckey was born in Perth. A son of a Motor Mechanic, educated at West Leederville and Wembley Primary Schools and Perth Modern School. Mr Tuckey is married, (wife Jenny), and has three children, a son (Michael) and two daughters (Sue and Judith) and five grandchildren (Sarah, Andrew, Ellen, Lauren and Samantha).
Business
At 18 years of age he commenced business as a house painter, progressing to retail grocery and the hotel industry. He moved to Carnarvon and extended his business activities into tourism, transport, earthmoving and data processing.
Defence Service
Mr Tuckey completed his National Service training and served in the Citizens Military Forces (now Reserves).
Local Government Service
Mr Tuckey served in local government in Western Australia for over 16 years (Carnarvon Council - 1964-1980). He was elected to the Carnarvon Town Council as its Mayor in 1964. During his period in local government he was also elected to the Executive of the Country Shire Councils Association of WA serving on Executive (1969-1976); Deputy President (1976-1978) and President (1978-1980) and he was also appointed a State Grants Commissioner (1976-80).
Parliamentary Service
In October 1980 he was elected to Federal Parliament as the inaugural Member for O'Connor in Western Australia and re-elected at all subsequent elections. The rural/rural urban O'Connor electorate extends from Albany and Hopetoun on the South Coast to Geraldton on the North West Coast covering an area of approximately 180,000 sq kms and encompassing 50 local authorities. Between 1984 and 1996 Mr Tuckey held various Shadow Ministerial portfolios in the Coalition.
As part of the Coalition Government from 1996/1998 Mr Tuckey was:
Chairman, Aboriginal Affairs, Government Members Policy Committee (February 1997 to October 1998);
Chairman, Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Works (October 1997 to October 1998); and
Committee Member of the Government's Tax Consultative Task Force (October 1997 to August 1998).
From 1998 /current:
Minister for Forestry and Conservation from 21 October 1998 to 26 November 2001;
Minister Assisting the Prime Minister from 21 October 1998 to 26 November 2001; and
Minister for Regional Services, Territories and Local Government from 25 January 2002 to 22 October 2003.

Member, Opposition Shadow Ministry from 14 December 1984 to 28 October 1989 and from 7 April 1993 to 11 March 1996;
Shadow Minister for Small Business and Administrative Services from 14 December 1984 to 1 May 1987;
Housing and Small Business from 1 May 1987 to 14 August 1987 and from 12 May 1989 to 28 October 1989;
Health from 14 August 1987 to 16 September 1988;
Employment and Training from 16 September 1988 to 12 May 1989;
Small Business from 7 April 1993 to 26 May 1994;
Veterans' Affairs and Defence Science and Personnel from 26 May 1994 to 11 March 1996; and
Deputy Manager of Opposition Business in the House from 16 September 1988 to 12 May 1989 and from 7 April 1993 to 26 May 1994.
General
Mr Tuckey's other interests include racehorse breeding and training. He was a member of the Committee of the Western Australian Turf Club for nine years (1990-99) including two years as Chairman.
As Minister for Regional Services, Territories & Local Government he was dedicated to being an active advocate for the rural & regional community, Australia's Territories and the Local Government sector on all issues with his cabinet colleagues in Canberra to the benefit of services in local communities.
